MSc In COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY
A master's of science degree in counselling psychology of University of Iringa is a 180 credits which prepares students for work in private and public practice, Universities, industries, mental health and mental retardation centres, orphanages, rehabilitation and hospitals setting. The programme is designed to help students meet requirements for licensure as professional councilors or psychotherapist.


Nature and Design of the Programme

The programme runs for two academic years and is divided into two parts:  Part one consists of comprehensive course work with written examination and in the form of a case Studies. The parts of the case studies include; phase one which involves a written treatment plan for a psychological counselling case; the second phase which involves an oral defense/presentation of the case to a committee of faculty members      


Part two is basically divided into two parts, part one is the practicum in counselling psychology which once students have a sound knowledge of psychological theory and appropriate skill training, they are placed in practicum positions. University of Iringa has established a reliable network with a number of recognized organizations and clinics prepared to accept students for internship. Students need to accumulate 50 credits of supervised fieldwork in order to complete the programme.  Practicum is the culminating experience in counseling/Psychotherapy education, preparing students to apply classroom learning to real world concerns. Success in these courses is a requirement for graduation. Again a student is required to do the research dissertation where by he/she must enroll in 80 credits of dissertation. The dissertation allows students to get involved as an active participant in research under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
